Conrad III of Germany

1093–1152 · 12th century

Conrad III was King of Germany from 1138 to 1152, the first ruler of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. His election began the long rivalry between the Hohenstaufen and the Welfs. He led the German army on the Second Crusade, which was mauled by the Seljuks in Anatolia in 1147 and failed before Damascus in 1148. He was never crowned emperor, and his nephew Frederick Barbarossa succeeded him.
