Gothenburg

Also known as Göteborg

Gothenburg is the second-largest city of Sweden, on the west coast at the mouth of the Göta älv. Founded by King Gustavus Adolphus in 1621, it gave Sweden an outlet to the North Sea outside the Danish-controlled Sound. It became the base of the Swedish East India Company in 1731 and grew into Scandinavia's largest port and an industrial centre.
