Gottlieb Daimler

1834–1900 · 19th century

Gottlieb Daimler was a German engineer and industrialist from Württemberg and a pioneer of the motor car. Working with Wilhelm Maybach in Cannstatt, he developed a light, fast-running petrol engine in the 1880s and fitted it to a motorcycle and a carriage in 1885–1886. In 1890 he founded the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, whose Mercedes cars of 1900 led eventually to the Daimler-Benz company.
