Cannstatter Wasen

1818 · 19th century · Also known as Cannstatter Volksfest

The Cannstatter Wasen, or Cannstatter Volksfest, is a large autumn festival held on the Wasen meadows beside the Neckar at Bad Cannstatt in Stuttgart, Germany. King William I of Württemberg founded it in 1818 as an agricultural fair after the famine of 1816–1817, crowned by a tall column decorated with fruit. It has grown into one of the largest beer festivals in the world, second only to Munich's Oktoberfest.
