Grande Comore
Grande Comore, or Ngazidja, is the largest island of the Comoros archipelago, dominated by the active volcano Karthala. It was divided among several Swahili sultanates, among them Bambao and Itsandra, whose rivalries France exploited; France made the island a protectorate in 1886 and attached it to the colony of Mayotte and dependencies in 1912. Its town of Moroni became the capital of the Comoros.
