Sultanate of Bambao

1600 CE – 1886 CE (approx.) · capital Moroni

The sultanate around Moroni on Grande Comore whose ruler Said Ali united the island under French protection in 1886.

Origins

Bambao was one of the districts of Grande Comore (Ngazidja) ruled by Shirazi-descended lineages from walled coastal towns, including Ikoni and later Moroni. By the 17th century it was among the leading sultanates, contending with the Sultanate of Itsandra for the paramount title of sultan tibe.

Rule and society

Its sultans governed with the elders of noble lineages under matrilineal rules of succession, and Islam framed law and education. Trade with the Swahili coast, Madagascar and Zanzibar brought prosperity, while island politics were dominated by endless wars between the sultanates, which often drew in mercenaries and outside powers.

Decline and legacy

Said Ali of Bambao, backed by the French adventurer Leon Humblot, became paramount and in 1886 signed a French protectorate over the whole island. Grande Comore later became a French colony and in 1975 part of the independent Comoros, with Moroni as the capital.
