Great Cloud Sutra

Also known as Mahamegha Sutra

The Great Cloud Sutra (Mahamegha Sutra) is a Mahayana Buddhist scripture translated into Chinese in the early 5th century. In 690 monks supporting Wu Zetian circulated a commentary on it which presented her rule as foretold by the Buddha, and she ordered Great Cloud temples built in every prefecture. It thus served as religious justification for the only woman to rule China as emperor in her own name.
