Emperor Zhongzong of Tang

656–710 · 7th century · Also known as Li Xian, Li Zhe

Emperor Zhongzong of Tang (656–710) was a son of Emperor Gaozong and Wu Zetian. He succeeded his father at the end of 683 but was deposed by his mother early in 684 and sent into exile. Restored by the coup of 705 that ended Wu Zetian's Zhou dynasty, he was dominated by his wife Empress Wei and died suddenly in 710, reputedly poisoned.
