Great Troubles

1359–1381 · 14th century · Also known as Great Turmoil

The Great Troubles were a period of civil war in the Golden Horde from 1359 to 1381, after the murder of Khan Berdi Beg. Over twenty khans rose and fell, while the warlord Mamai ruled the west through puppet khans. The chaos loosened the Horde's grip on the Rus' principalities, letting Moscow defeat Mamai at Kulikovo in 1380, before Tokhtamysh reunited the khanate.
