Grodno

Also known as Hrodna

Grodno, or Hrodna, is a city in western Belarus on the Neman river, near the borders of Poland and Lithuania. First recorded in the 12th century, it became one of the main towns of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where Sejms of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth often met; the last Sejm, in 1793, approved the Second Partition there. It passed to Russia in 1795, to Poland between the wars and to Soviet Belarus in 1939.
