Guglielmo Boccanegra
Guglielmo Boccanegra (died 1274) was a Genoese merchant leader who became the first Captain of the People of Genoa in 1257 after a popular revolt against the nobility. He negotiated the Treaty of Nymphaeum with the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos in 1261, but his authoritarian rule provoked the nobles, who overthrew him in 1262 and restored their own control of the commune.
