Guru Nanak

1469–1539 · 16th century · Also known as Nanak, Baba Nanak

Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism and the first of its ten gurus, born near Lahore in 1469. After a transforming religious experience he travelled widely, by tradition as far as Mecca, Baghdad and Tibet, teaching devotion to one formless God, the equality of all people regardless of caste, and honest work and shared food. He settled at Kartarpur, where a community of disciples, the first Sikhs, gathered around him; his hymns open the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism's scripture.
