Gwanggaeto Stele

414 · 5th century · Also known as Stele of Gwanggaeto the Great

The Gwanggaeto Stele is a granite monument about six metres tall erected in 414 by King Jangsu of Goguryeo at the old capital, present-day Ji'an in Jilin, China, in honour of his father Gwanggaeto the Great. Its inscription of some 1,800 Chinese characters records Goguryeo's founding legend, Gwanggaeto's campaigns, including an expedition of 400 to help Silla against the Wa, and lists of tomb-guard households.
