Gyanendra of Nepal

b. 1947 · 20th century · Also known as Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah

Gyanendra was the last King of Nepal, reigning from 2001 to 2008. He came to the throne after the royal massacre of June 2001 killed his brother King Birendra and much of the royal family. In 2005 he dismissed the government and took direct power, provoking the mass protests of 2006, and the Constituent Assembly abolished the monarchy in 2008.
