György Dózsa

c. 1470–1514 · 15th century · Also known as George Dózsa

György Dózsa was a Székely soldier from Transylvania chosen to lead a crusade against the Ottomans proclaimed in Hungary in 1514. The mostly peasant army turned against the nobility instead, and the revolt spread across the kingdom before it was crushed near Temesvár. Dózsa was executed on a heated iron throne, and the diet then bound the peasants permanently to the land.
