Gyptis

fl. c. 600 BCE · 7th century BCE

Gyptis is the daughter of Nannus, king of the Segobrigii, in the foundation legend of Massalia (Marseille). In the version told by the Roman historian Justin, she chose the Greek leader Protis as her husband at a wedding feast by offering him a cup of water, and her father gave the couple land on which the Phocaean colonists founded the city around 600 BCE. Another version calls her Petta.
