Protis

fl. c. 600 BCE · 7th century BCE

Protis was the leader of the Greek settlers from Phocaea who, according to tradition, founded Massalia (Marseille) around 600 BCE. In the legend told by the Roman historian Justin, he arrived as Nannus, king of the local Segobrigii, held a feast at which his daughter Gyptis was to choose a husband, and she chose Protis. The marriage secured land for the new colony.
