Haakon VII

1872–1957 · 20th century · Also known as Prince Carl of Denmark, Haakon VII of Norway

Haakon VII was King of Norway from 1905 to 1957, born Prince Carl of Denmark. After Norway dissolved its union with Sweden in 1905, a referendum confirmed him as king, and he took a traditional Norwegian royal name. During the German invasion of 1940 he refused to accept a collaborationist government and led the government in exile from London, becoming a symbol of national resistance.
