Haldimand Proclamation

1784 · 18th century · Also known as Haldimand Grant

The Haldimand Proclamation was a decree issued on 25 October 1784 by Frederick Haldimand, governor of the Province of Quebec, granting the Six Nations of the Iroquois a tract of land six miles deep on each side of the Grand River in present-day Ontario. It rewarded those who had fought for Britain in the American Revolution and lost their homelands in New York. Most of the tract was later sold or alienated, a loss still disputed today.
