Hall of Worthies

1420–1456 · 15th century · Also known as Jiphyeonjeon

The Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon) was a royal research institute of Joseon, enlarged by King Sejong in 1420 as a centre of scholarship. Its young scholars studied Chinese institutions and classics, advised the king and compiled works on history, agriculture, medicine and ritual, and they assisted with the creation of the Korean alphabet. King Sejo abolished it in 1456 after several of its members plotted to restore his deposed nephew Danjong.
