16th century · 16th century

Hamzah Fansuri was a Sufi poet and scholar from Sumatra, active in Aceh in the late 16th century. His mystical poems, written in the syair form, are among the earliest known works of Malay literature and made Malay a language of Sufi thought. His teaching on the unity of being was later condemned as heretical by Nuruddin ar-Raniri.
