Han–Xiongnu War

from 129 BCE · 2nd century BCE

The Han–Xiongnu War was a long series of conflicts between the Han Dynasty and the Xiongnu confederation, entering its offensive phase from 129 BCE under Emperor Wu. Han armies campaigned deep into the steppe and secured the Hexi Corridor. The war reshaped the northern frontier and opened routes to Central Asia, though at great financial cost to the Han.
