1895–1961 · 20th century · Also known as Maharaja Hari Singh

Hari Singh was the last Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, reigning from 1925 to 1952. At the partition of India in 1947 he hesitated between India and Pakistan, hoping for independence. After Pashtun tribal forces invaded from Pakistan in October 1947, he signed the Instrument of Accession to India, which led to the first India–Pakistan war over Kashmir.
