Harold MacMichael

1882–1969 · 20th century · Also known as Sir Harold MacMichael

Sir Harold MacMichael was a British colonial administrator who served in Sudan, as governor of Tanganyika and, from 1938 to 1944, as High Commissioner for Palestine. In 1945 he was sent to Malaya to obtain the signatures of the Malay rulers to treaties transferring their sovereignty to the British Crown, the basis of the Malayan Union. The pressure he used caused outrage among Malays.
