United Malays National Organisation

1946– · 20th century · Also known as UMNO

The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) is a Malay nationalist party founded in 1946 under Onn Jaafar to oppose the British Malayan Union plan. Under Tunku Abdul Rahman it formed the Alliance with the Malayan Chinese Association and the Malayan Indian Congress, which won the 1955 election and led Malaya to independence in 1957. Through the Alliance and the Barisan Nasional it governed Malaysia without interruption until its defeat in 2018.
