Hasekura Tsunenaga

1571–1622 · 17th century

Hasekura Tsunenaga was a samurai in the service of Date Masamune who led a Japanese embassy to Spain and Rome from 1613 to 1620. Sailing via Mexico, he met King Philip III and was received by Pope Paul V in 1615. By the time he returned, Japan had turned against Christianity and the mission brought no lasting results.
