Hashimids of Derbent

869–1075 · 9th century · Also known as Hashimid dynasty of Derbent

The Hashimids of Derbent were an Arab dynasty that ruled the city of Derbent on the Caspian coast as hereditary emirs from 869 to 1075. Founded by the governor Hashim ibn Suraqa as Abbasid authority weakened, the family gradually became a local power, fighting and allying with the Shirvanshahs and neighbouring Caucasian peoples. Their history survives in a local chronicle preserved by the Ottoman historian Münejjimbashi.
