Haytham ibn Khalid

9th century · 9th century

Haytham ibn Khalid was an Arab governor of Shirvan from the Yazidid family who in 861, as Abbasid authority collapsed after the murder of the caliph al-Mutawakkil, declared himself Shirvanshah. He turned the governorship into a hereditary principality with its capital at Shamakhi. His descendants, the Yazidids, became thoroughly Persianised and ruled Shirvan for centuries.
