Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom Stein

1757–1831 · 19th century · Also known as Baron vom Stein, Karl vom Stein

Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein was a Prussian statesman who, as chief minister in 1807–08, began the reforms that rebuilt Prussia after its defeat by Napoleon. His October Edict of 1807 abolished hereditary serfdom, and his municipal ordinance of 1808 introduced town self-government. Dismissed under French pressure, he later advised Tsar Alexander I and helped organise the war of liberation against Napoleon.
