Heller (coin)

12th century · 12th century · Also known as Haller pfennig

The Heller was a German coin first struck at the imperial mint of Schwäbisch Hall in the 12th century as a silver pfennig, the Haller pfennig, from which its name comes. It spread across the Empire, gradually losing value until it was worth half a pfennig, and survived as a small coin in Austria-Hungary and, as the haléř, in Czechoslovakia.
