Herborn Academy

1584–1817 · 16th century · Also known as Hohe Schule Herborn

The Herborn Academy (Hohe Schule Herborn) was a Calvinist college of university rank founded in 1584 by Count John VI of Nassau-Dillenburg at Herborn in Hesse. Teachers such as Caspar Olevian, Johannes Piscator and Johannes Althusius made it a centre of Reformed theology and political thought, and the young John Amos Comenius studied there. It declined in the 18th century and closed in 1817, continuing as a seminary.
