Person
Hildebrand Jost
Hildebrand Jost was Prince-Bishop of Sion from 1613 to 1638. In a long struggle with the communes (Zenden) of the Upper Valais over temporal power, he was forced in 1628 and finally in 1634 to renounce the Carolina, the claim that the bishops ruled the Valais by a grant of Charlemagne. The renunciation made the Valais a republic of the seven tenths, with the bishop keeping a largely honorary role.
