Brig, Switzerland

Brig is a town in the Upper Valais, Switzerland, on the Rhône at the foot of the Simplon Pass, now part of the municipality of Brig-Glis. It was one of the seven tenths (Zenden) that ruled the Valais as a republic. In the 17th century the merchant Kaspar Stockalper, who controlled the trade over the Simplon, built the Stockalper Palace there.
