House of Elders (Somaliland)

1993 · 20th century · Also known as Guurti

The Guurti, or House of Elders, is the upper chamber of the parliament of Somaliland, made up of clan elders and their representatives. Councils of elders mediated in the conferences that ended Somaliland's internal conflicts, and the Borama conference of 1993 gave them a formal place in the state. The house reviews legislation and has repeatedly extended the terms of elected bodies when elections were delayed.
