House of Liechtenstein
The House of Liechtenstein is an Austrian noble family that takes its name from Liechtenstein Castle near Mödling, south of Vienna. Rising in Habsburg service, its members acquired large estates in Moravia, Bohemia and Silesia, including the Duchy of Krnov in the 1620s. Having bought the lordship of Schellenberg and the county of Vaduz, the family had them raised in 1719 to the Principality of Liechtenstein, which it still rules.
