Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster

c. 1176–1242 · 13th century

Hugh de Lacy, a younger son of the Lord of Meath, was made Earl of Ulster by King John in 1205 after he had driven out John de Courcy. He lost his lands when John campaigned in Ireland in 1210, fled to France and fought in the Albigensian Crusade, returning to recover the earldom by 1227. He died in 1242 without male heirs, and the earldom later passed to Walter de Burgh.
