Hugh of Tuscany

c. 953–1001 · 10th century

Hugh, also called Hugh the Great, was Margrave of Tuscany from the 960s and for a time Duke of Spoleto and Camerino, a loyal supporter of the Ottonian emperors in Italy. He ruled from Lucca and Florence and endowed monasteries, among them the Badia of Florence founded by his mother Willa; Dante later praised him. He died in 1001 without sons, and the march passed to other families.
