Hummay

r. c. 1075–1086 · 11th century · Also known as Humai, Hume

Hummay was a king of Kanem near Lake Chad in the late eleventh century and the founder of the Sayfawa dynasty, which ruled Kanem and later Bornu until the nineteenth century. Kanem tradition, including a charter of privileges known as his mahram, holds that he adopted Islam, making him the first Muslim ruler of the kingdom. His accession ended the rule of the earlier Duguwa dynasty.
