Person
Hydarnes the Elder
Hydarnes, also known as Hydarnes the Elder, was a Persian nobleman and one of the seven conspirators who overthrew the Pseudo-Smerdis, a plot led by the Achaemenid prince Darius. His name is the Greek form of the Old Persian Vidṛna, which may have meant 'he who knows the guilt'. According to some Persepolis tablets he served as satrap of Media under Darius, and for his services he was seemingly given the satrapy of Armenia as a semi-hereditary fief, which his descendants governed until the Hellenistic period; Orontes I, ancestor of the Orontid dynasty, descended from him. His sons Hydarnes the Younger and Sisamnes served as commanders under Xerxes I.
