Ibrahim I ibn al-Aghlab

756–812 · 8th century · Also known as Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab

Ibrahim I ibn al-Aghlab was an Arab army commander who founded the Aghlabid dynasty of Ifriqiya. In 800 the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid made him hereditary governor of the province in return for an annual tribute, giving his family virtual independence. He restored order among the restless Arab troops and built the palace city of al-Abbasiyya near Kairouan.
