Ilisu Dam

2006–2018 · 21st century

The Ilisu Dam is a large hydroelectric dam on the Tigris in south-eastern Turkey, part of the Southeastern Anatolia Project. Built between 2006 and 2018, it began filling in 2019, and by 2020 its reservoir had submerged most of the ancient town of Hasankeyf and dozens of villages, despite international protest. Some monuments were moved to a new site before the flooding.
