Ilya Muromets
Ilya Muromets is the most popular hero, or bogatyr, of the Russian byliny, the oral epic songs, said to come from the village of Karacharovo near Murom. In legend he sat paralysed until the age of 33, then gained great strength and served Prince Vladimir of Kiev against monsters and steppe raiders. He has been identified with a monk whose relics lie in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
