Ipswich, Massachusetts

Ipswich is a town on the North Shore of Massachusetts, founded by English Puritans in 1634. In 1687 its townspeople, led by the minister John Wise, refused to pay taxes imposed by Governor Edmund Andros without an elected assembly, and their leaders were tried and punished. The episode is remembered as an early protest against taxation without representation.
