Ivan Crnojević

d. 1490 · 15th century

Ivan Crnojević was lord of Zeta, the forerunner of Montenegro, from 1465 to 1490. Caught between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, he fought the Ottomans in alliance with Venice and lost his lands for a time. In 1482 he moved his seat from Žabljak to the mountain stronghold of Cetinje, where he founded a monastery in 1484. His son Đurađ set up the printing press that produced the Oktoih in 1494.
