Zeta under the Crnojevići

1451 CE – 1496 CE (approx.) · capital Cetinje

Last free Serbian Orthodox principality of the 15th-century Balkans, where Ivan Crnojević founded Cetinje and his son set up the first South Slav printing press.

Origins

After the decline of the Balšić lords and the Serbian Despotate, the Crnojević family took the lead in the mountains of Zeta. Stefan Crnojević, ruling from around 1451, allied with Venice and joined Skanderbeg's League of Lezhë, holding the territory around Lake Skadar and the highlands behind the Bay of Kotor.

Rule and society

The principality was a confederation of mountain clans led by a hereditary lord who balanced Venetian alliance against Ottoman pressure. Ivan Crnojević moved his seat from Žabljak to Cetinje in 1482 and founded a monastery there in 1484. His son Đurađ opened a printing press that produced the Oktoih in 1494, among the first Cyrillic books printed.

Decline and legacy

Ottoman pressure forced Đurađ Crnojević to flee to Venice in 1496, and Zeta was absorbed into the Ottoman sanjak of Scutari. Leadership of the highlands passed to the metropolitans of Cetinje, laying the ground for the Prince-Bishopric of Montenegro.
