Jacob van Artevelde

c. 1290–1345 · 14th century

Jacob van Artevelde was a wealthy citizen of Ghent who from 1338 led the city and, in effect, much of the County of Flanders. To keep English wool flowing to the Flemish cloth industry, he took Flanders into alliance with Edward III at the start of the Hundred Years' War, and Edward was proclaimed king of France at Ghent in 1340. He was killed by a Ghent crowd in 1345.
