10th century · 10th century

Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Hasani was a descendant of the Prophet's grandson al-Hasan ibn Ali who took control of Mecca in the 960s, around the time the Fatimids conquered Egypt. He founded the line of Hasanid sharifs who governed the holy city, usually acknowledging whichever Muslim power ruled Egypt, and so began the Sharifate of Mecca that lasted until 1925.
