James I of Aragon

1208–1276 · 13th century · Also known as James the Conqueror

James I, called the Conqueror, was king of Aragon and count of Barcelona from 1213 to 1276. He conquered Majorca in 1229 and the Muslim kingdom of Valencia in 1238, creating new realms with their own laws within the Crown of Aragon. In the Treaty of Corbeil of 1258 he gave up most claims north of the Pyrenees. His chronicle, the Book of Deeds, is the first royal autobiography in Catalan.
