Jason of Pherae

d. 370 BCE · 4th century BCE

Jason of Pherae was tyrant of Pherae in Thessaly who built a large mercenary army and forced Pharsalus, under Polydamas, to submit. Elected tagos, the federal leader of Thessaly, around 374 BCE, he made Thessaly briefly a great power, allied with Thebes and was said to plan a campaign against Persia. He was assassinated in 370 BCE, and his kinsmen ruled Pherae until Philip II expelled them.
