Jepara is a port town on the north coast of Central Java, Indonesia. In the 16th century it was the seat of Ratu Kalinyamat, who sent fleets against Portuguese Malacca, and Portuguese writers called her the queen of Japara. It is famous for its wood carving and as the birthplace of Kartini, a pioneer of education for women in Indonesia.
